How do you p*tty train a child who is scared of public t*ilets?? My son covers his ears when we bring my daughter to go p*tty and has ever since one of those automatic t*ilets went off when he least expected it. My daughter was frightened when that happened too but she realized I had her and that everything was ok. My son panics when I put him on the big p*tty at home and when I asked him to try to go while we were out running errands yesterday, the fear in his voice concerned me. Has anyone out there dealt with this??
I personally love the automatic flush of the public t*ilets but they have brought fear to my son. We use a tot-sized p*tty at home but what about when we are out?? Any ideas??

I know Leisha and Bonnie both carry a small portable potty in their car and that's what they use while they are out.
Yikes! I don't want to run to the van anytime we need to go! I really want him to go where we are! Thanks Rachael!
We went through the same thing with Sam when we were using public toilets. That is when I invested in the portable potty. It is a lifesaver...especially when we are driving down the road and he has to go because I can just pull off to the side and let him use that one rather than drag Eli out of the car also. I also ask him many times before we go in places so he can use that one. As for the public toilets, Sam eventually got used to the automatic flush. I would get him prepared before it flushed and made it a big deal saying "It's about to flush It's about to flush..there it goes!" and he thought it was funny. I too love the auto flush because I'm such a germ freak.
Poor JB! Maybe you could take him into one of those bathrooms when he doesn't have to actually go...and you can tell him he's going to hear a sound like an airplane taking off. Then you could flush it. Maybe you could even take a toy airplane in there. I don't know. I know it's a stretch! :D It's all I got!
What did you guys end up doing last night?
Too funny!!! My younger one, who is 9, is still terrified of the automatic flush!!! I keep telling myself that she'll get over it, but will she? Well, at least she'll go on black toilets now. LOL
I haven't been through this yet but had a friend who said she took her child w/ her in the public restroom and sat down and showed her child it was ok. Maybe a few times of seeing you sitting there and nothing happening would help?
My kids never struggled with those potties, but my nieces and nephew have. I think my sister-in-law has a plastic potty in her trunk. She makes the kiddos try to go before going inside a public place. It seems kindof icky to go in the car...and I don't know how she disposes of it! But I guess it's better than having an accident to clean up! OOps, I just read Rachael's comment. In that case, I don't have any good info!! Except to say that you could pray with him and continue to show him that the potty can not hurt him. Ask him why he is scared. My oldest son used to be afraid of water going down the drain. How ridiculous, I thought! Until I took time to talk to him and he revealed that he thought HE was going down the drain with the water. :) Potty training is definitely not the highlight of parenting!!
I wish I had something to tell ya - sorry! Have you tried googling an answer?
Video above wouldn't play :( Said it was no longer available... :(
Maybe let him inspect them when he's not going potty? I have NO IDEA!
OH. I'm trying to remember if my kids didn't like the automatic flushing toilets.
They are both older now.
Only thing I can say is as they get older it will get better. It doesn't seem to bother either of mine.
My poor little T freaked out about that once. I don't know how she got over it...scared K half to death once too....
Maybe letting him "play" with flushing it when not in use.
We have a portable seat that folds up that we use - it sits on the potty seat(germ prevention) and I let them sit on it while we flushed it so they could see it was ok.
UGH - I think they just get used to it, like the hairstons's said....
