Road Trips

We've been away, for 4 or 5 days , visiting my Grandparents. We had a blast. It was exactly what we needed! My husband's work load finally lightened up and we had time to get away. Now he starts traveling for work trips. We had to squeeze in a little family fun before that begins. We are home now!

Many people say you can tell the health of your family relationships by taking road trips. We recently met some friends with 5 older kids and they were telling us about their 16 hour road trips. They told us how they use a movie as the last resort. They talk, read, enjoy one another and then during the last few hours they all watch a video together. Wow! I want my kids to love each other like that. I want a road trip to be an adventure.

So how is our family's relationship? My husband and I came home feeling we were super healthy. I must admit, in the past, we have had a few yucky trips. This one was different. Maybe we both needed the break and the 'Grands' were just that - a refreshing break! Or, maybe we both hit the road with a bigger goal in mind and we did what we teach our kids to do, WE used self-control when we were frustrated. We really didn't feel frustrated at all on this trip!

So videos in the van. Ok, on our trip to Houston I tried to delay video time but that didn't work at all. We had a 10 hour drive and a 3.5 year old and a 2 year old. They are used to videos straight away when we pack up the van. Long trips = videos! So, 30 minutes later we had a video on and they watched videos most of the trip. I failed! On the ride home, they went 1.5 hours with talking and playing together (in their carseats) and they didn't ask for a video. Unfortunately, my son began to whine and aggravate his sister and so I buckled trying to keep the peace. Pretty good huh? They went an hour longer than the first time. Still not what I wanted but I didn't have many distracting toys or ideas to keep them from fighting. In fact, the distracting toys I brought caused whining. What is up with that? I brought a small Aqua Doodle for my son to use and dry erase markers for my daughter to practice her ABC's. Two activities that involve writing but my son immediately began crying for the markers and my daughter wanted the Aqua Doodle. My son doesn't fully understand the markers must remain on the book. I felt overwhelmed. They were completely uninterested in the other toys I brought.

What toys or activities do you plan for road trips? My kids are too young for finding ABC's on the road. We keep books in the van and so a book isn't a treat. They always have books. We have a basket of toys for each of them. Are they too young to do anything other than watch videos? We have another road trip coming soon. We are going with my husband on a work trip and I could use a few ideas! I want to use videos as a last resort but I don't have any other ideas. Help a Mommy out! Do you have any ideas or tricks?
We only do DVD's via a portable player on trips over 3 hours away. This is a special treat.

We each pick a different color and the first person to count 10 cars of that color on our side of the interstate "wins."

Thanks for stopping by my blog :) We actually just passed through Alabama on our way to another state, but we are still pretty close!

In the giftbags I made for my kids for our roadtrip, I had all kinds of individually packed snacks- those 100 calorie packs are great. Then I went to the dollar store and got light up pens, plastic animals, notepads, stickers, bubble rings, little plastic games...stuff like that. My kids are 4.5, 2.5 and a baby, so I got the two kids the same toys so that they wouldn't fight. And they watched a LOT of videos. We bought them three new ones. At this age they get so whiny when they're tired that I really think it's hard to go for long without the movies.
Blessings on your trip. If you learn any great tips, send them my way!

Our van doesn't have a dvd nor do we have a portable one. So, when we travel 10 hours to the beach, we take CD players and play veggie tales. This year, I might try books on tape for my oldest, he'll be 5 next month.
This year I want to make something I saw from Kid Concoctions - using a gallon size storage bag - you fill it with black paint and seal it closed. Have your kids color a sheet of paper with different shapes, lines, whatever, so that the whole sheet is covered. Attach the bag to the sheet and hold them together with two 'frames' made from cardboard. Then tape around the outside. They'll be able to 'draw' in the black paint and see their colorful creations underneath. I hope my explanation did the craft justice. You can look up kid concoctions on google, maybe, to find the idea with better directions. Hope this helps,

Thanks for stopping by my blog home! We broke down and got a portable DVD last summer for DD mostly for trips where I am on my own or we have to travel back late and I don't want her falling asleep.

Most of our travel is in rural areas so she's always fascinated with looking for cows, etc. Or trains. Trains are big here. We also take some Little People aka her "buddies" and she is quite into the imaginary play with them. As for our little guy, well, he's not interested in much right now so it's harder.

Sounds like you had a wonderful trip! Look forward to getting to know you better!

Ok, there is nothing wrong with videos! Especially when preschool and toddlers are involved. Get some music type videos that get them singing and doing hand motions. (shop the dollar rack at walmart, they have some great Kidsongs dvds that my kids absolutely love!) You can mix these in with the movies, and get a little PE while in the van :) If you want to invest a little more than a dollar, Hillsong Kids DVDs are incredible!

So far you all have several new good ideas!

Tallie, I wonder if they are too young for anything but videos too. We have a few sing-a-long videos and I did break up movies with the sing-a-longs. We listened to CD's and they did nap. I really want to try to limit the video time so that as they get older they have learned to do more than watch a DVD, I want them to see the world out of their window and to use their imagination too. Maybe another year or two and they will be ready??

Keep the ideas coming! I sure can use them!!

Thanks, but I'm not so creative, lol. I was just following our curriculum's suggestion! :) Sometimes it stretches me to do these things, partly because my children are young. My hope is that by doing it now, we'll all be more comfortable doing it when they are older. They really do enjoy helping me bake, but they were so bashful about giving it to the others. I'm really happy with our first year of homeschool, I'll start kdg with my oldest in fall. This year was kind of our 'trial year' and it went well, even with having a baby in the middle of it. The biggest thing that has helped me is find encouragment from like minded moms through blogs and several yahoo groups.
Have a great weekend!
