The Year of JB's Hair

In the beginning there were locks of curls, and it was good!

Did I ever tell you about the time I took my kids for a hair cut? JB has had a few BAD hair experiences. The first one was not any one's fault, he was just a bit overwhelmed by all that comes with a hair cut. He was freaked out by the cape and did not trust the man with the scissors in his hands. I had to hold him in my lap, without the protective cape, and JB was very stressed. Oh, I forgot to say that HC was thrilled to be free, since I was tied down in the chair with JB. She was 3 at the time and was not as aware of our rules. She was climbing in and out of a vacant chair and spinning while giggling. Can anyone else feel my pain? It is funny NOW.

JB had a few additional bad hair experiences over the year and it became such a traumatic event that I began cutting his hair. This was not the best idea we've had as parents. But it did lessen the fear of the cape, scissors and razor for JB. The sight of these tools were no longer too much for him. So maybe some good DID come of my hair cuts. Since I cut JB's hair, HC HAD to have her hair cut too. It just wasn't right for JB to be pampered without HC getting in on the action.
(Excuse the condition of the kitchen, this was taken during the pre-blogging days and I didn't intend on sharing this photo. I didn't stage it properly! haha)
JB's June hair cut was so bad that JB knew it. I was left with the task of 'fixing' the mess. The lady CHOPPED scalped my son and JB felt awful. He kept touching his head and trying to pull at his hair. We were keeping his hair a little long and this lady would NOT listen to our instructions. We told her to stop and we left, mid-cut.
Yes! A "professional" did THIS to my baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can STILL feel the RAGE I felt when this happened. Grrrrr...!!! I have never wanted to hurt someone more than I did this day!
First of all, if you cut hair and do not listen to the people paying you - I hope you get fired! Second, if you are NOT patient with children, say you are incapable so we do not waste our time! Third, if the parents want the hair a wee bit longer than you like - do what the parents want. Our JB has a slight curl to his hair and short hair only reveals a few little unpleasant twists at the wrong spots. He needs a little length. (I would love to have his hair!)

So, back to our story. The next cut, after the scalping, was from a super nice lady. She was a dream!! Then it was HC's turn. She sat in the chair, proud and thrilled to be pampered. HC was giggling with glee. The lady began to cut and stopped. She looked at me and said, 'Your daughter's hair is crooked, it wasn't cut straight when it was cut before.' Well, everyone in the shop heard us when I shared the JB hair story nightmare and I could see the wonder in their eyes. 'Did this Mother have ANOTHER bad experience?' I then said, "I know, that was due to a free hair cut I gave her. I am the crooked hair stylist.' Everyone in the room burst into laughter. It was one of those moments you never forget. We've since had 2 great hair cuts and I think/hope JB is over his hair crisis. We are still trying to grow his hair out from his scalping, but we are on our way to cool hair now. I feel it!
After the scalping JB STILL has no hair!! We are on our way to a full head of hair again, it just takes time! Don't they both look pleased though?? My HC is such a girly girl. Sparkles, a hair cut and sitting in THE chair. She was in love with it all!

Have you ever tried the kids salons they have now? My son was a nightmare too when we took him to a regular salon. By the end we would have to hold him down...I always felt horrible. Then we discovered a place where the kids sit in planes or cars, etc and can watch a movie or show at the station. He does great now and looks forward to going! I just posted about my baby getting his 1st haircut there this past weekend.

Poor little dude!
We're two for two in little man hair cuts. We were very fortunate to find a barber that specializes in little boy haircuts. (Let me know if you need his number!) The Wog was a dream both times! Now, there were suckers involved, but it was totally worth the cavity risk!

Poor JB, what a cruel thing to happen to such a sweetie....honestly, I could have probably done a better job and I don't cut hair for a living.

They both look great though and HC is DEFINITELY all GIRL!!!

AMEN!
Great post. Though my boys haven't experienced a "Scalping" like poor little JB, (besides Daddy giving them summer buzzes earlier this summer - which came out fine in the end) I had very tramatic haircut when I was 15 years old. It was horrible. I got the "then-in" shag cut and the woman literally literally butchered my hair. I looked like Dorothy Hamill (yes, skating days Dorothy Hamill). To this day I am terrified of the hairdressers. Sad thing was that I had a woman I had been going to since I was 3 and she had refused to cut my hair, so I went to a high-end boutique and spent ALL my babysitting money from that summer on that cut - which evidently ruined my life during that time. UGH! I can feel your pain and frustration. I can't imagine someone doing that to my child. You feel violated. I loved this post... it just really made so much sense to me and I completely understand how you feel. They look absolutely adorable in the most recent photos!! SO CUTE!!!

I hope you didn't pay for that haircut! Also, I find a sucker is a great way to get through a haircut. If your place doesn't have them, bring one yourself.

Finding a good stylist is so tough! We had a great one, but she moved. Now the search is on... I hope we won't run into your lady!

Who did that?? He is still the most adorable boy! Seriously, I would like to know so we never go there. :)

I'm so thankful my girls never had bad cuts. Looking back they think they had some bad cuts, but it was just the style of the times :) Lindsey once had her ear cut, but it was by a good stylist and it was accidental. She was about 3 or 4. She told me when we got home, poor kid.

Your little JB couldn't look bad if his hair was shaved off!

Sorry to hear about your awful experience with having your child's haircut. I agree that was a scalping job.
I had a hair stylist once pretty much hack up my hair before too. It was awful. When I got back home..my husband said he could've done a better job than that.

Thanks Kerry! I think I will be on the look out for these kind of salons for our next cut!!

Bee - I may need your barber! haha You never know!

Amber - I did a better job than the 'pro'. I actually fixed it as best I could without shaving it.

Melissa - we refused paying! Although they thought they were still due!

Ginger - I know he can take any cut. But I would rather request a buzz cut in the future! haha I prefer the freedom of choosing how short his hair is for now. I know that will not last for long. haha

The worst part of our experience was how upset JB was after. He felt awful. It was heartbreaking. His hair is longer now than the last pic. I know he couldn't keep the curls forever. But he was still young enough to keep them at the time. Now he needs the big boy cut.

Now that's getting a hair cut!!

I used a trimmer on my boys' hair until they were old enough to go to the barber. I do an ok, but their barber does a much better job keeping everything even and tapered.

Here's a hint: a good video and/or sucker!!!
