Shortly after HC was born we had a problem pop up. We began to find wasps and/or dirt daubers flying around the house. We could not find out how they were getting inside and I did NOT want to spray bug poison IN my home.
My first born was weeks/days old. What new mother would spray bug spray?? I decided to try a few household items and see if I could rid the bugs without spraying toxins indoors. Some may argue that my remedies are in fact toxic smells too, but I felt a little better spraying them rather than pure bug poison. So what did I find?? I found spraying a bug with hairspray or Lysol (or such products) kills those little guys every time.
We later found the source of our dirt daubers was via our air vents. When HC was 2 months old we had our vents cleaned. Once we fixed the problem - no more bugs!! Yay! The other day I was reminded of this discovery as I sat staring at an icky spider!! I thought maybe some of you Moms out there may like to know there are other remedies to ridding your home of pests indoors!

We had bad spiders in our first apartment. Ugh! At the time, I had several plants and did not want to harm them with chemicals, so some organic gardening site recommended that I use a mixture of peppermint essential oil and water. I'm not sure it really worked, but, by golly, the apartment sure did smell good!
Any solutions for the several bats that we have had IN our HOUSE!
Bee - sounds like it smells good!!!
Ginger -- OH!!! MY!!!!! I guess my dirt daubers were mild nuisances after all! Yikes! I would FREAK out if I found a bat in my house! You must post about that!
Good tip - how about ants? We've had the exterminators out 2 or 3 times - argh
Bats...yikes!!! Sorry, I was getting ready to leave my comment, and I saw bats. SCARY!
Glad to know you've figured out bug-killer alternatives. Our neighborhood is un-lovingly referred to as Spider Ridge instead of Hawk Ridge because we have spiders EVERY WHERE!!! I'm going to have to try your tricks. :)
BATS? I'd freak, too! We had the same problem in our old and the vent cleaning took care of ours, too.
I had to laugh at thinking of you walking around with a bottle of hairspray! At least they'd be perfectly styled bugs! :)
Enjoyed reading your blog. Thanks for the advice. I have had the same problems before. This year has been really bad for ants. With the weather getting cooler it is much better now. I am from Alabama also. Nice to meet you. God Bless!
Great idea girl. I have started using safe cleaners around the house now and have tried to get rid of all the toxins around here. Course, hairspray isn't the "best" around kids, but hey, it is better than the alternative, huh?
I have a "Lysol" that has no toxins...I might try that.
Of course, if you could go to the store and find non-toxic remedies then that is the best solution. These are items I had around the house when the event occurred. So that is how I found they work - I was in a bind and used what was on hand! They did do the job on the spider too - it died right there on the spot!
We spray a Home Defense spray around the outside of our home periodically...this keeps the bugs out. It really works.
Leigh Ann this spray really works for the ants too. You can get it at Menards or Walmart.
eeek to Ginger's bat.
