Super Nanny, JB and sleeping

Over the last week my son has had a runny nose and a cold. He hasn't been himself. There have been two nights when he was so wired he would not go to sleep. It wasn't like he was defiant or anything, I could just tell that he was wide awake.

The way the night would go was we put the kids to bed and JB would tip toe out of his room and into the hall. Sometimes he made it as far as to the kitchen where he found a corner to sit quietly. We put him to bed and then this would repeat. So we chose to let him stay up and sit with us for a little bit and he went to bed with no problem.

Ok, I knew we were creating a monster the minute we let him up the first time but - my son is about the most precious thing in the world and I wanted to cuddle with him a little more after seeing his little blue eyes looking up at me. The past is the past! :)

Last night we were done with the cuteness of this new adventure of not going to bed and we put our foot down. JB WOULD go to bed and not stay up. After a couple of swats to the diapered butt and fussing, we had made no progress. My husband said, 'What are we going to do?' And then it hit me WHAT WOULD SUPER NANNY DO??? The perfect question to ask since I watch her show when I can and there have been many families with bed time trouble. So I gave the Super Nanny solution a go and... about 30minutes later JB was finally down for the count.

What did we do?? We told JB one last time that it was bedtime and he was going to bed. We put him in bed and left. My husband stood at JB's closed door and when JB opened to find dad, he quickly closed it. Then a little later after JB seemed content to stay in his room hubby sat down in his recliner and that little monkey came into the living room again! JB actually turned his back to hubby, opened his arms for hubby to grab him under his arms and my husband picked him up -WITH NO COMMUNICATION WHATSOEVER - he placed JB into bed. This went on and on. It felt like forever but then, it happened.... JB gave up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He stayed in his bed and went to sleep. As I am typing this, I am having to repeat these steps for nap time, but the Super Nanny technique worked for us and we give her bedtime technique two big Mommy and Daddy thumbs up!

So glad it worked! My Best Girl just moved to a big girl bed. When she discovers she can get out on her own, we may have this problem as well!

I am glad it worked! So, since you're implementing her tatics, will we not see the MorningSong Family on Super Nanny? ;-)

Great idea.
I know bedtime routines can be so frustrating.
So glad you figured out a way to make it work for you.

Don't you just LOVE SuperNanny? I am so glad you are having sleep success. That has been a huge challenge with my youngest, even before he was born! : ) He is still, at seventeen months, giving us trouble about going to bed, but the last few nights have been better. That is so frustrating when they won't go down for naps or bedtime. Probably one of my LEAST favorite parts of parenting!

I was talking to a friend about Supernanny today. I couldn't remember how she got kids to stay in time-out. Can you?

Yes! She keeps putting them back into time out until they stay. No talking or engaging in any disagreement. Just put them back until they stop getting out. Once they stay, their time starts.
