I've taught them a few tricks!

Here are a few tricks my kids can do!!

This first one is their response to my saying 'Self-control'. This is great for when they are on their way to arguing while we are out or becoming restless while at a restaurant. They haven't learned to keep this pose for too long but it does re-focus their attention.

This is what they do when we are in a store and they are touching too many things. I say, 'eyes are for looking and not hands'. They then put their hands behind their backs. What tricks can you or your kids do??

Those are the best! How do they react when you ask them to do this? Do they kind of think its fun? or discipline? I love it!

Great trick Ginger!! :)

Amanda, I started this off as a game and now they comply willingly. It is like a magic word around our home 'Self-control' and they are like robots. In the middle of the heat - they get self-control when nothing else works. I actually taught them to repeat it after me so they crack me up when they stop their bad behavior and both repeat 'self-control' while they clasp their hands together. Another word that works wonders in our home is FREEZE. It works much better than stop or no. Freeze gets action baby!! :)

May I ask at what age do they start to understand? Woggie thinks "no" means the start of an exciting game where he gets chased & the hand patting that's supposed to be popping-- well, that's just a fun bonus!

Hey Bee,
My son cooperates willingly I think because he sees big sister doing it. I have tried this off and on over the last year with my daughter and it just started to click one day. She has way more understanding than my son but he still obeys.
At this stage it is a reaction and not truely an obedience issue. We try all things like this at first -with my husband and I making it a game. We also try to get them to come up to us, look us in the eye and say yes ma'am/sir when we call their name. We play it as a game then we try to use it in life. If they do not show understanding then we lay low for a bit and then try again when we get the urge.
As for age, HC is going to be 4 in a few weeks and JB is 2.5. We may have been able to get HC to comply at a younger age if we started trying it sooner as a game but we didn't. We had a lot of issues over the last year of her understanding the rules but her being perplexed as to why JB didn't have to follow suit. So that distracted our focus a bit. I think if tried at 2.5 or older it should be do-able. We just had the distraction of her obeying us on basic things since JB was too young to do the same. If no sibling to bring a distraction it may be do-able by 3 years old?

I feel your pain on chasing/patting being a game. It can be tiring at times. haha

Once when I arrived at the check out lane I found Pokemon cards that mysteriously appeared in our Target cart. I've also found a Disney DVD and Lime Flavored Jello another time! (Green is Matt's favorite color.)

I gotta get my kids on the tricks you teach!!!

Those are great! And I love Ginger's too - although I think I'm more willing to try out your tricks over hers!! :D

I learned this from Jen at Lots of Scotts and it has seemed to really work well. When I am loading the baby up into the carseat, I tell Madison to hold on to mommy's legs so that she stays still and doesn't run out into traffic. She still has her moments, but for the most part, it has been a life saver!
